Bialystok is the capital of the Podlasie region and one of the largest urban centers in northeastern Poland. In rankings it is often mentioned as one of the best places to live in our country, which is due, among other things, to the fact that Podlasie boasts a huge number of tourist attractions and unparalleled natural advantages. It is not without reason that the area is called the Green Lungs of Poland. Also in Bialystok itself you will find a lot of parks, squares and forests. We should add that the city lies on the Biala River, in the vicinity of Biebrzanski National Park and Narwianski National Park.
However, natural assets are not the only magnet attracting tourists to the area. So what is worth seeing in Bialystok?
The Branicki Guest House Palace, located in the city center, is one of Bialystok's biggest attractions. It is an example of Gothic architecture at its best. The building dates back to the 18th century, and today the local registry office - the Wedding Palace - operates here.
Also associated with the Branicki family is the Branicki palace and park complex. This is undoubtedly the most valuable monument of Bialystok, not without reason called Versailles of Podlasie, or even Polish Versailles. It is one of the best-maintained magnate residences dating back to the Saxon era. In addition to the late Baroque palace, it also houses a magnificent park, covering just under 10 hectares. Due to differences in terrain, the park is located on two levels - the upper one is arranged in the style of a French park, the lower one in the English style. The park complex includes numerous walking paths, fountains, stately trees and numerous monuments. The palace is the seat of the rectorate of Bialystok's Medical University.
Bialystok is also a city of temples, the list of which opens with the old Farny Church - a late Renaissance building with a Baroque interior. There is a beautiful historic portal above the main door. Another important religious building is St. Roch Church - an interesting example of sacred modernism. Built on a hill, the church has a tall tower topped by a statue of the Virgin Mary. When visiting St. Roch's Church, note the star symbol repeated in many places (decorations, pilasters, ceilings, etc.). Also impressive is the Bialystok Archcathedral - located right next to the Old Parish Church and in theory an annex to it, which cleverly avoided the tsarist ban on building new Catholic churches. In practice, the Bialystok Archcathedral outgrows the old church many times over, and the red brick and two soaring towers are the temple's calling cards, visible from afar. The archcathedral was built in 1900-1905 in neo-Gothic style. The attention of tourists is also drawn to the St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker Cathedral - that is, the Cathedral Church of the 19th century. Its distinguishing features are the interior finished in Byzantine style and the bell tower with five bells.
What else should you see in the capital of Podlasie? Hasbach Palace, built in the 1880s. - in the interior you will find original stoves and fireplaces - and Bialystok City Hall, a late Baroque building erected in 1745-1761. At present it houses the Podlaskie Museum.
The above monuments are only part of the attractions with which Bialystok tempts tourists. A great convenience for visitors is good access by public transport. You can get here both by train and bus. Intercity buses to Bialystok stop at the PKS station, located near the main train station.
