Chalon-sur-Saone is a charming town on the Saone River, in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise wine region. A trip here can be filled with memorable excursions to vineyards and caves.
Quite a treat for photography lovers is the Museum of Nicéphore Niépce, a pioneering photographer, located in Chalon. Nicéphore Niépce was a French physicist and inventor. It was he who took the world's first then-impermanent photograph View from the Window in Le Gras in 1816. However, he tirelessly recorded the process. In 1829, he entered into a partnership with the young, feisty painter-inventor Louis Daguerre, already popular throughout France at the time. From then on, the men continued to work on their discovery together.
The Musée Nicéphore-Niépce is a place of pilgrimage for amateur and professional photographers. It houses a collection of 1,500 cameras and three million photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries, developed using a variety of processes.
Chalon-sur-Saone is also the birthplace of another famous Frenchman - Dominic Vivant Deone. It is to him that another museum in Chalon - the Musée Vivant-Denon - is dedicated. This famous French artist, diplomat and traveler befriended Napoleon and Josephine. At the age of 51, Denon traveled with Bonaparte, to Egypt and became a representative, founded by the scientists of the Napoleonic expedition, of the Institut d`Egypte. He made the first reconnaissance of the Giza necropolis. Under his direction, several hundred ibis mummies were unearthed at Sakkara. Denon's contributions to the study of Egyptian art were also great. The reception of his works lay at the heart of scientific Egyptology, and many of the drawings are still valuable information about defunct or ruined sites today. Denon amassed a collection of Egyptian antiquities with which he supplied many French museums.
Denon was a pioneer in fields such as archaeology, art history, Egyptology and museology.
The museum has a room dedicated to him, documenting his career and showing some of the engravings he made.
Another attraction worth seeing in Chalon is, located on a square in the center of the city, the Chalon Cathedral. While this building is not impressive in size - it is rather small for a cathedral - its interior definitely is. It represents a large mishmash of architecture: the neo-Gothic facade and two towers date from the 19th century, but inside there are elements that date back hundreds of years. For example, a beautiful fresco dating back to 1400 or a tapestry woven in 1510.
The cathedral is located in the central area of Chalon, right on the very busy Saint - Vincent square, filled with restaurants, cafes, bars. On weekends, the square turns into a market, and its history dates back to medieval times.
If the hustle and bustle of the busy Place Saint - Vincent begins to bother you, you can enjoy the quiet of the Chalon Cathedral.
Côte Chalonnaise Wine is something for connoisseurs of the wines for which all of France is famous.
Chalon lies on Burgundy's Route des Grands Vins, and the Côte Chalonnaise extends from the south of the Côte d'Or, starting with the Maranges vineyards, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The region lies on the elevated western bank of the Saône River and extends for some 25 kilometers north and south.
Hidden in this idyllic landscape are 44 wine villages, where winemakers grow mainly pinot noir and chardonnay grapes and ferment the wine in large oak barrels.
Tour Du Doyenné, Saintle Saint-Laurent - there is a walking trail around the old center of Chalon with as many as 30 stops. At the tourist information desk you can pick up a leaflet with a description of each one. At each turn you can see something interesting, whether it's a Renaissance half-timbered house in the Saint-Vincent district or a view of the city and the cathedral from the Pont Saint-Laurent.
It's also worth mentioning that Chalon is home to the Ancien Hôpital Saint-Laurent, founded in 1530 and whose patient was Victor Hugo.
The town also has a modern aquatic center with a swimming pool complex. You can also enjoy a boat cruise on the Saône and admire Chalon and its surroundings from a different perspective. This city guarantees attractions for everyone.
