The setting sun gives the granaries located on the Vistula River an amazing color. So it's worth taking a walk in the late afternoon to see these amazing sights. Lying on the European Brick Gothic Route, Grudziądz boasts several remarkable monuments, and yet it is still quite intimate here.
Granaries
Grudziądz became an important center of grain trade, the effects of which can still be seen today in the form of a complex of granaries stretching along the Vistula River's Blonia Nadwiślańskie - this characteristic panorama of Grudziądz, additionally created by the Water Gate and the towers of the parish church and the Jesuit College, is one of the most beautiful landmarks of Polish cities, especially attractive when viewed from the other side of the Vistula River.
Old Town
Grudziądz was part of the state of Mieszko I, however, as a result of the division of the country, it fell into the hands of Conrad of Mazovia, and then, thanks to the efforts of Teutonic diplomacy, ended up in the hands of the Teutonic Order. The Teutonic Knights located the city in 1291 under the Chelmno law-just as they did with Toruń and Chelmno.
Today, the small market square is surrounded by nicely restored colorful townhouses, which unfortunately are mainly reconstructions of buildings that existed before World War II. The Old Town Square has been renovated, and the streets leading away from the market are lined with cozy cafes and restaurants. Very charming is an alley with colorful umbrellas-even in the rain, or perhaps especially then, it looks very positive.
Teutonic castle ruins and Klimek Tower
Built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Knights, the castle has unfortunately not survived to the present day. At the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, on the orders of the Prussian king, the building was demolished, and the material obtained in this way was used to erect the Grudziadz fortress, as well as buildings within the city. Thanks to the intervention of the Prussian marchina, the Klimek tower survived, becoming a city landmark of the castle, attracting strollers to the city park. In 1945, German troops, withdrawing from the city, blew up the tower, which was only rebuilt in 2014. It now serves as a tourist attraction and an excellent vantage point overlooking Grudziadz and the Vistula River valley. Besides, thanks to the archaeological work carried out, it was possible to uncover relics of the former castle, leaving it as a so-called "permanent ruin". , "permanent ruin".
Museum in Grudziadz
It is located in the Old Town, in the former monastery buildings, granaries and the so-called Abbesses' Palace. In addition to the opportunity to enter the granaries and see them from the inside, several permanent exhibitions await visitors at the museum. Among them are an archaeological section presenting excavations from Roman times to the Middle Ages from Grudziadz and the surrounding area; the history of the city from Teutonic times, through the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Prussian partition to the city's return to independent Poland, and, as a third, a section devoted to the Grudziadz Cavalry School.
Bicycle enthusiasts will love Grudziądz at first sight. It is through Grudziądz that the Vistula Bicycle Route runs. The ride along the Vistula escarpment from the Citadel towards the granaries is extremely picturesque. This view in Grudziadz is definitely worth seeing!
