Janow Lubelski is a charming town in Lubelskie province. It is located on the border of the Western Roztocze and Bilgoraj Plain, surrounded by the vast complex of the Janów Forest.
Its history dates back to 1640. The town was founded on the site of an earlier settlement named Biala and for a time was so named. During World War II, a significant part of Janow Lubelski was destroyed and devastated. Today, most of the local buildings are the result of post-war reconstruction.
What is worth seeing in the city and its surroundings?
The urban layout of the old town dates back to the mid-17th century. Janow's small market square is surrounded by restored townhouses, and there is also a square with fountains and benches, as well as a monument to John the Baptist, the town's patron saint. A bus station, a tourist information point, as well as a sanctuary and a monastery are located right next door.
This museum is located in former prison buildings. Its expositions deal with the history of the town and its surroundings, as well as the large prison that operated there in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
This Baroque temple was built in the 17th century as the Church of St. John the Baptist for the Dominican Order. It was located in the place where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared since 1645. The richly decorated interior features an image of Our Lady of Grace. Despite intense bombing by the Germans during World War II, the temple suffered virtually no damage at all. One of the bombs fell through the roof into the interior of the church, but did not explode, which is considered a miracle. There is a museum at the church with valuable manuscripts, liturgical vestments and a large collection of old photographs of the city. The sanctuary, meanwhile, is surrounded by a beautiful park with a garden, a miraculous spring and the Apparition Chapel.
Janowskie Stoki is a spring with crystal clear water and a protected natural monument. In fact, it is several smaller springs, merging into one larger spillway. Right next to it stands a statue of Jesus from the mid-1890s. Every year on Good Friday, some residents of Janow Lubelski come here at sunrise to wash themselves.
This museum was founded by photography enthusiast and camera collector Antoni Florczak. Despite the small size of the place, his collections of photographs, negatives, old cameras and camcorders are impressive. In addition, the museum features a darkroom, a thorough understanding of the process, as well as various techniques for taking photos.
The park is located in the very center of Janov Lubelski, in the place where the city's New Market with the Zamojski District Office, the Orthodox Church and the prison used to be. Nowadays you can find a lot of trees, flower plantings and a fountain drawing water straight from a spring. In the central point of the park is an obelisk in honor of Tadeusz Kosciuszko, reconstructed after the destruction of the war - the oldest monument in the world dedicated to this famous Pole.
The forests surrounding Janow Lubelski are extremely diverse and are an example of a natural dendrological garden. As part of the work on the arboretum, its vegetation was enriched with three zones - heath, ornamental plants and rhododendrons. Walking and bicycle trails leading through the arboretum, as well as an educational path, abound with various ponds, footbridges, as well as numerous picnic spots and benches, making it an ideal place for a peaceful break surrounded by nature.
