Jedrzejow is a town of nearly 15,000 people in the Świętokrzyskie province. It lies 38 kilometers southwest of Kielce and has a history as long as that of the province's capital. It received city rights in the 13th century. The names of great Poles such as Wincenty Kadlubek, Tadeusz Kosciuszko and Jozef Pilsudski are associated with Jedrzejow. This small town is known as the city of clocks. Why? We write about it later in the article.
This town has several places worth visiting. If you are in the area and looking for interesting sights to see and unusual attractions - Jedrzejow may be a hit.
Located in one of the townhouses at the market square, the Przypkowski Museum is distinguished from the outside by the characteristic dome of an astronomical observatory, and inside it houses a sizable collection of sundials - the third largest in the world (over 600 pieces). In addition, the facility's collection includes other types of clocks, astronomical instruments, books, and memorabilia related to the region.
The museum was founded on the basis of the private collection of a doctor from Jędrzejów, Feliks Przypkowski, who began collecting sundials in 1895, as well as literature and other materials devoted to gnomonics, or the science of sundials. Since then, the collection has been steadily growing, including collections related to other departments, such as arts and crafts, prints or even kitchen utensils and porcelain.
At the back of the museum, a garden called the Garden of Time still awaits visitors, full not only of flowers and other vegetation, but of course... clocks. In addition, you will find a water cascade and a gazebo. The garden is open to all visitors, and admission is free.
This church dates back to the 15th century. It was built on the site of an earlier 12th-century temple. Originally Gothic in style, it was later rebuilt many times, so that the exterior and interior show a mixture of many architectural styles. The most valuable surviving 15th-century monuments there are a fragment of the foundation plaque embedded in the temple wall and elements of the original Gothic furnishings - a crucifix or bronze baptismal font.
This Cistercian abbey is the oldest in Poland - it dates back to the 12th century. It was founded by two brothers from the House of Griffiths, Archbishop Janik of Gniezno and Klemens, a palatine of Krakow, who invited monks from the French town of Morimond there. It was the Cistercians who contributed to the development of Jedrzejow, which was soon afterwards granted city rights. Along with the monastery, there is also a Baroque church on the abbey grounds. The chronicler, bishop of Krakow, Blessed Wincenty Kadlubek, who spent the last years of his life there, is associated with the place.
There are several places in Jedrzejow that are particularly child-friendly. In addition to the museum with its collection of clocks and the Garden of Time, which is of interest to young and old alike, you can have a nice time by going to the "Zoolandia" playroom or visiting one of the places we write about below.
A narrow-gauge Swietokrzyska Kolej Dojazdowa called Ciuchcia Ekspres "Ponidzie" runs from Jedrzejow to Pinczow. The train's cars are pulled by a steam locomotive, and along the way you can admire the Nida River valley areas, ravines, surrounding fields and meadows.
A place of recreation for locals. This small body of water is fenced and well managed by the city. There is a beach with water equipment rental, a playground and a small restaurant.
The facility is located in the picturesque municipality of Imielno in the Jedrzejow district not far from the route of the "Ponidzie" Railway Express. After exiting the carriage, you can explore the park with life-size models of dinosaurs and visit the mini zoo. In addition, various events and hippotherapy classes are held on the premises.
An expressway and a national road run through Jedrzejow. The town is well connected with the rest of the country and with surrounding towns. It lies on the route from Kielce to Krakow. There is a railroad station in Jedrzejow, and nearby, on Wladyslaw Reymonta Street, is a bus station from which coaches leave for many cities in the country and abroad. Bus Jędrzejów is also a good choice as a form of transportation to nearby villages and towns located in the Świętokrzyskie province.
