Kamieńskie- a city in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, this large city on the Dnipro River has a population of about 230,000.
It is said that history comes full circle. The name of the city-Kamensky is the first name, mentions dating back to 1750. City rights were granted in 1926, mentioned Kamensky was only for 10 years. Already in 1936 the name was changed to Dneprodzerzhinsk, restored the original name only in 2016.
The metallurgical industry developed very dynamically here during the USSR period, unfortunately, it had a very negative impact on the pollution of the city, as Kamensk was considered one of the most polluted. High concentrations of harmful agents, including nitrogen dioxide, benzene and nitrate, persisted until the closure of the plants after the collapse of the USSR.
When you arrive in the city, we particularly strongly recommend two attractions. The first is the Museum of the History of the City of Kamensk. The interesting and distinctive facade catches the eye, inside there is a rich permanent exhibition of the museum. The place is highly recommended among visitors.
Another recommended attraction is St. Nicholas Cathedral. Erected in 1894, donations for the construction of the temple came from executives and workers of the local metal works. The Sobor was later expanded, including the addition of two side aisles, decorated with colonnades along with domes. The cathedral was closed in 1929, and later had a museum of the revolution here. It functioned as a temple from World War II until 1960, when a museum was again established here. The temple was finally returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1988.
It is interesting to note that Leonid Brezhnev - General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1964-1982 - was born in Kamensk. It is noteworthy that Leonid Brezhnev is a highly regarded leader of Russia. According to Russians, he is the best leader of Russia in the 20th century, many believe that the Brezhnev era was the best from the point of view of the Russian people.
