Kolomyja is a city located in western Ukraine, in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, on the Prut River, the seat of the Kolomoysky district. A center of engineering, metal, light, food, wood and paper industries.
The name of Kolomyia is connected with the founder of the city, King Koloman of Halych. The town was mentioned in 1240 and belonged to the Halych-Volyn principality. In the middle of the 14th century it was incorporated into Poland.
Walking around the city, it is impossible to miss the Easter egg museum - for in front of the building stands a huge 13-meter orange Easter egg. The collection of the Easter egg museum includes more than 12 thousand colorful eggs, decorated with various techniques and motifs, coming not only from Ukraine, but from all over the world. Easter eggs can not only be admired, but we can also learn about the methods of decorating eggs, and even try our own hand at this intricate craft. This is the only such museum in the whole world!
While visiting Kolomyia, it is worth visiting the Kolomyia City History Museum. If you like history or are visiting Ukraine in search of Polish traces this museum is an ideal place. Because Kolomyja used to be on Polish territory, the historical turmoil of the partitions and the subsequent World Wars meant that since 1991 the city has been on Ukrainian territory. In the museum you will find plenty of memorabilia from the time when Poles lived here.
The National Museum of Folk Art of Hutsul and Pokuttya is one of the biggest attractions in the city and is definitely worth a visit. We can take a close look at almost 50,000 exhibits related to the daily life of the Hutsuls - highlanders living in the Romanian and Ukrainian parts of the Carpathian Mountains. It is worth noting the elements of the old furnishings of Hutsul huts, beautifully decorated costumes, artistically worked wooden elements or embroidered goods. In the 19th century, the School of Pottery was established in Kolomyia, which trained potters and tile makers - their amazing works, in addition to the fact that we can now admire them at the exhibition, were even sent to the court in Vienna. An additional attraction is the opportunity to buy local handicrafts, make your own jug or listen to traditional music.
