Krotoszyn is a town of almost 30,000 people in the Greater Poland province located in the Kaliska Upland more than 100 kilometers south of Poznan.
Krotoszyn was founded in 1415 and located under the Magdeburg Law by King Wladyslaw Jagiello. Its name derives from the Krotowski family, owners of the town's land in the 15th century. Throughout history it was repeatedly destroyed by wars, invasions and fires, but each time it was quickly rebuilt and developed again.
Dating back to the late 17th century, the town hall is a symbol of the city. Nowadays, after reconstruction, it represents the Neo-Renaissance style. In its ground floor there are still remains of the original town hall.
While in the city center, it is worth taking a stroll around the Market Square and the surrounding streets, as Krotoszyn still retains a medieval urban layout remembering the 14th century.
This wooden church dates back to 1572. It was built on a Greek cross plan and topped with a dome, making it look like an Orthodox church. It used to be a hospital church.
This is how the historic wooden arcaded house from the 18th century is referred to. Until 1969 it was the seat of the regional museum.
The museum collects objects and publications related to the history of the city and its surroundings. In addition, many exhibitions and cultural events are held on its premises, including museum lessons for children. The facility is housed in an 18th-century baroque Trinitarian monastery building.
The city park named after the Polish Army is located in the center of Krotoszyn. It is 8 hectares in size and its history dates back to the 17th century, when the then owner of Krotoszyn, Jakub Hieronim Rozdrażewski, established a garden around his estate. Today, the park features, among other things, two ponds with fountains, a well, a bird aviary and a playground.
This is the name given to one of Poland's largest complexes of natural oak forests located on the borders of three counties - Krotoszyn, Ostrów and Pleszew. The complex is located within a Protected Landscape Area. Several interesting sightseeing objects can be found there, including St. Martin's Well and Bronze Age barrows. The area of Dabry Krotoszyn has numerous biking and walking trails.
In Krotoszyn you can find many worthwhile establishments, most of course in the vicinity of the Market Square. The "U Bielawnego" restaurant serves Polish dishes in a modern way. In addition, it bakes its own breads and sells dinner dishes and other products in jars. Another interesting dining establishment is "The Slow." It's a place that invites you to stop and celebrate the moment with vegan delicacies and modern versions of favorite dishes from different cuisines.
The city also has a number of cafes serving great quality coffee, also offering alternative brewing methods. The atmospheric "Leniwiec pierogarnia cafe", in addition to coffee and cakes, offers homemade pierogi and soups in modern editions. It is also worth visiting "By the Way" - a café with sweets and snacks located at Krotoszyn's Market Square.
Two national roads and one provincial road run through Krotoszyn. There is also a train station in the city, where trains going to Poznan, Leszno, Ostrów Wielkopolski or Wroclaw stop.
On the other hand, from the bus station located near the railway station - on Konstytucji 3 Maja Street - one can directly travel to Poznan, Ostrów Wielkopolski, Bydgoszcz and Wroclaw, among others. Krotoszyn is well connected. International bus lines passing through it carry passengers to cities in Germany, Italy France or England.
