A district city of Ukraine located on the Latoritsa River, in the Transcarpathian Plain. It is the seat of the Catholic bishops of the Greek and Latin rites, as well as the Orthodox eparchy of the Mukachevo-Uzhorod Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. The city is an important transportation hub, with the M06 Ukrainian national road and the Chop - Stryi railroad running through it. It is also a center of food and timber industry. The largest monument of the town is Palanka Castle, which houses a historical and ethnographic museum.
