Before answering the question of what to see in Naples, we'll look at a few facts about the city. Naples is the third largest city in Italy (after Rome and Milan) and the largest urban center on the western coast of the Apennine Peninsula. It is an important point on the map of Italy in terms of tourism, business and culture. In popular opinion, the city does not have the best reputation - it is, among other things, associated with the Mafia and strikes by cleaning services. All negative associations are dispelled by a personal visit to Naples, which charms tourists with its sights, historical wealth, Italian hospitality and culinary offerings. Naples stands with restaurants! Suffice it to say that this town is considered the motherland of the world-famous pizza - it was here in 1830 that the first pizzeria in the world opened - Antica Pizzeria Port' Alba. Its signature dish was Pizza Napoletana. Naples restaurants also serve other Italian dishes and specialties from other continents. Walking through the downtown area, tourists have the opportunity to taste something delicious every now and then. A stay in Naples is undoubtedly a vestibule of paradise for the taste buds, and the local restaurants are listed among the most recommended in the whole of Italy. Despite the fact that the local cuisine leads one into temptation, it is worth taking a break from the table to go sightseeing in Naples and the surrounding area.
One anecdote says that there are so many monuments in Naples that some of them must have gone underground. This is, of course, a reference to the numerous catacombs, tunnels, aqueducts and underground cemeteries for which the Campanian capital is famous. Today's Naples is a bustling metropolis of less than a million people and one of the most popular destinations among tourists visiting Italy. The list of sights in Naples is so extensive that it could be the canvass for a bound tourist guide. Such "historic" prosperity is influenced, among other things, by the very rich history of the city, which was founded in the 8th century BC. The diversity of the cultural heritage that we can experience in Naples is evidenced by the fact that over the centuries the city has been under the rule of the Romans, the Andegavens, the Spanish, the Austrians, the French, and during World War II, during which the city's buildings suffered many losses, Naples was also occupied by the Germans.
Visiting all the sights of Naples can be a real challenge. It is advisable to start exploring the city from the most representative points. These certainly include the modernist post office building, the Nuovo Castle, the Royal Palace and the Neo-Renaissance Umberto I Gallery. Naples, like other Italian metropolises, boasts numerous religious sites. Among the most famous temples, guidebooks list the following: the Cathedral with the blood of St. Januarius, the Monastery of St. Clare, the Church of Gesù Nuovo (Trinità Maggiore). The number of temples is perhaps second only to museums. Naples' most important museums include: Sansevero Chapel, the Italian Art Museum and the National Gallery and the National Archaeological Museum. As we mentioned, there is plenty to explore underground in Naples as well. Tourists are magnetized by the catacombs of St. Gaudioso, the catacombs of St. Januarius and the Napoli Sotterranea or Galleria Borbonica shelters, among others.
One of the largest cities in southern Italy tempts with attractions, but from a Polish perspective it seems quite remote. How to get there? A good idea might be to travel by plane, although it's worth remembering that flights to southern Italy can be expensive and the flight network is irregular. For many people, a better idea seems to be a bus to Naples, or more specifically a coach Sindbad, going from Poland to Naples.
