Narbona is located in the south of France, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, situated on the Mediterranean Sea, bordering Spain. This picturesque city was founded by the Romans in the 2nd century BC.
One of Narbonne's most valuable landmarks is the magnificent Gothic cathedral of Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur, located in the heart of the city. This magnificent, soaring temple is very different from the Gothic monuments of southern France. It is one of the tallest Gothic buildings in France. The edifice, with its 40-meter-high choir, dominates the restored town. Construction of the church began in 1272. The cornerstone was sent from Rome by Pope Clement IV (former Archbishop of Narbonne) himself. The cathedral was never completed. Inside the cathedral, the attention is drawn to the large Baroque high altar, the 18th century organ, 14th century stained glass windows and the Aubusson tapestries.
Adjacent to the cathedral is the sprawling complex of the former archbishop's palace (Palais des Archevêques), now home to the city government and the Musee d'Art et d'Histoire. It is divided into the Old Palace (12th-13th centuries) and the New Palace (14th century). The towers date back to the Middle Ages, while the building between the left and middle towers was built in the 19th century by E. Viollet-le-Duc. The museum includes, among others, the apartments of Louis XVI, Roman mosaics, French, Dutch, Italian paintings In the Old Palace, in a former chapel, the Archaeological Museum.
Les Halles - built in an innovative way with stone and steel, the hall is one of Narbonne's more interesting buildings. Erected in the early 20th century, the building is still considered one of France's more interesting old department stores. In addition to purely aesthetic impressions, we can stock up here with fresh fish, fruits, vegetables and cheeses and, of course, wine.
Horreum L'Horreum - is the only Roman-era monument in Narbonne. A very interesting underground building was used as a warehouse for agricultural products. Today there are two galleries made of stone with side niches. To introduce the right atmosphere, the whole thing is interestingly illuminated.
Narbonne's other important monuments include the 19th century neo-Gothic building of the town hall (Hôtel de Ville), the Chapel of St. Magdalene (Chapelle de la Made. Magdalena (Chapelle de la Madeleine), the Carmelite monastery (Couvent des Carmélites), the Narbonne Romanesque house (Maison romane de Narbonne), the Abbey of Sainte-Marie de Fontfroide (Abbaye Sainte-Marie de Fontfroide) located near the city, and a short stretch of the famous Via Domitia - the first Roman road built in Gaul in the 2nd century BC.
Narbonne also boasts a 5-kilometer beach with fine golden sand. Beach lovers are sure to be delighted. Wine gourmets, on the other hand, can sample delicious products from local vineyards.
