Welcome by bus to Strzelce Opolskie!
Strzelce Opolskie is a town located in Opolskie Province on the northeastern slope of St. Anne's Mountain. The town is located about halfway between the thriving urban centers of Opole and Gliwice. Less than 20,000 people live here. The place took its name from the shooters, princely hunters who hunted game in the surrounding forests. The etymology of the town is commemorated by a monument in the Market Square below the Town Hall. The name of the town changed depending on who ruled the local lands, and it has been in its present form since 1945.
The first mention of settlement here dates back to the 13th century. Subsequent decades brought changes of municipal rulers (Opole, Non-Modlin, Piast princes, Austrian rule) and new buildings, which today are tourist landmarks of the city. Among the most recognizable attractions in Strzelce Opolskie are the city walls, the fighter's monument in the Market Square, the tower, the ruins of the Piast Castle, the Town Hall, the masthead, St. Barbara's Church, St. Lawrence Church and the castle gate. Those wishing to explore the history of the city and region also have at their disposal: The Museum of Sacred Art, as well as the Regional Chamber of Traditions, the Chamber of Forestry Education, and the Chamber of Fire Fighting Traditions. Most of the aforementioned monuments are located in the center of the city, north of National Road 94, which cuts through Strzelce Opolskie. A glance at the map is enough to see that the town has much more to offer tourists. South of DK 94 stretches the vast Renard Park - one of the most important tourist attractions in Strzelce Opolskie. The area is an ideal place for recreation in nature, which can be a good interlude to urban sightseeing.
Speaking of parks, the nearby St. Anne's Mountain Landscape Park is also worth a visit. Among the things that await visitors to this place are paths among post-volcanic rocks, lush vegetation of nature reserves and monuments, and a majestic monastery at the top of the hill. The place is steeped in history related to the Silesian uprisings. There are also other natural sites in the area: the "Stobrawsko-Turawskie Forests" protected landscape area, the "Ligota Dolna" xerothermic vegetation reserve, the "Płuźnica" and "Tęczynów" forest reserves. There are also nearby bicycle trails for the active. The Strzelce Opolskie Cultural Center is thriving in the city, organizing events for children and adults.
