Located in Lower Silesia Province, Swidnica is a city with a long history. It is located on the Bystrzyca River in the Sudetenland foothills. It is inhabited by more than 60,000 people. The city is famous for its large number of monuments and greenery, and by its architecture one can perfectly see the Polish, Czech and German influences mixing here over the years.
.What is worth seeing in Swidnica? Here's our list of the city's most interesting sights and attractions.
This Evangelical-Augsburg church is the most important monument and symbol of the city. It was built in 1657 in the half-timbered style, filling the wooden frame with a mixture of clay and straw, without using a single nail. The church is the largest wooden church in Europe - it can accommodate about 7,500 people. As many as 27 entrances lead to the richly decorated, painted interior. The church was built as a result of the signing of the Peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years' War. Its unusual appearance has to do with the fortifications that surrounded the construction of the temple at this location. It could not have a bell tower, was not supposed to resemble a church and had to be made of perishable materials. Something amazing is the fact that despite all this, the temple has survived unchanged for more than 350 years.
.Swidnica's cobbled market square is surrounded by colorful Renaissance and Gothic townhouses, and its centerpiece is, of course, the town hall with its tall tower, from the top of which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city. Trees, fountains and sculptures can also be found here. An interesting highlight is a bench dedicated to Swidnica-born Maria Cunitz, a 17th century Silesian scientist who lived in Swidnica, the first astronomer and author of the work "Urania propitia".
This is the only museum dealing with this subject in the country. Here you can learn many interesting facts about Swidnica as a merchant city located on the main trade routes of ancient Europe, as well as the history of medieval trade and crafts. The interiors replicate the appearance of a stall, pharmacy or colonial store, and bring you closer to the old methods of weighing goods and brewing, for which the city was once famous.
The cathedral is famous as the temple with the tallest tower in all of Lower Silesia, with the highest hanging bell in Poland. Its construction was initiated by the Duke of Świdnica, Bolko II in 1330. It was completed more than 150 years later. The interior decor is in Gothic-Baroque style.
.The city is one of the greenest in Lower Silesia. There are many parks and recreational areas. The largest is the Central Park with the Rose Garden located nearby. Another interesting place is the park named after General Sikorski, with a replica of the Fokker Dr.I aircraft of German pilot and World War I hero Manfred von Richthofen. If the weather is favorable, it is also worth going to the Witoszówka Reservoir, which is a bit distant from the center.
