Syców is a town of 10,000 people in Lower Silesia province that is part of the Wroclaw agglomeration. It is located on the border of the Twardogórskie Hills and the Ostrzeszowskie Hills, on the left tributary of the Barycz River - Mlynska Woda. One can find there many monuments and remnants of a rather long history - Syców received city rights as early as 1276.
For many centuries it was a Free State, a creation treated on a par with the Silesian principalities, ruled by state lords reporting directly to the Emperor. Throughout history, Sicily passed under the rule of various families - the Maltzans, Brauns, Dohns and Birons. And it was the latter who most influenced the history of this city and significantly developed it.
In Syców you can find many interesting monuments. The Biron castle, which once existed here, contributed to the development and growth of the city. It was built in 1821 in the English Neo-Gothic style. The castle survived World War II unscathed, but shortly afterwards, due to the Red Army's march, it was repeatedly set on fire and looted until it became a complete ruin. To this day, there are no remains of the main part of the castle, but a few mementos related to it can still be found in Syców.
The park was designed in the English style on the initiative of the Biron family according to a design by Georg Grapow. Initially it was a green area surrounding the Syców castle full of orangeries or greenhouses. Nowadays you can find many natural monuments there, such as the over 300-year-old purple beech tree, ponds and the Birons' Mausoleum or bench.
The Gothic Roman Catholic Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in the 15th century on the site of an earlier temple that existed there. Inside one can find, among other things, several 16th-century tombstones or antique altars. The classicist Evangelical Church of the Apostles John and Peter served as a private chapel of the Biron family until 1945, as it was connected to the castle. It is now surrounded by a princely park. The temple dates back to the 18th century and is the work of architect Carl Gotthard Langhans, author of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, among others.
The site takes a closer look at the history of Sicow and the surrounding lands. It is located in an 18th-century building on Liberty Square, where the municipal court once operated. In addition to engravings, maps or German-language newspapers, the exhibits also include old original furnishings of Sicovian homes and show what Sicovians once did for a living. In addition to the history of the town, you can also learn about the history of the Biron von Curland family there, and see a model of their castle in one of the rooms.
The lagoon is located less than 7 kilometers from Syców. It was created as a retention reservoir to protect the surrounding area from flooding, but recreational infrastructure has also been created there - a large parking lot, beach volleyball courts, a playground, as well as water equipment rental and toilets with showers. Because of the conditions there, it's a favorite spot for sailors and windsurfers.
The Prof. Stefan Bialobok Forest Arboretum is a forest garden with a sizable collection of trees and shrubs spread over 650 hectares of land, of which up to 85 hectares can be visited. The arboretum also has many ponds and sometimes even plants not normally found in this geographic zone, such as vegetation typical of high mountain climates.
While in town, it is worth going to an establishment with the intriguing name "GAPA" serving tasty burgers and yam fries, or to "Made in Napoli by Siervo" - a small restaurant abounding in specialties of Italian cuisine. Also worth a visit is the local "Anders" brewery, which produces SYC one beer. Good espresso, on the other hand, can be enjoyed in the "Coffee Zone," a roasting plant where, in addition to the many types of the black beverage served on site, you can stock up on a packet of your favorite coffee to brew at home.
