Trento (Italian: Trento) is a city surrounded by mountains in northern Italy in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. It is located halfway between Bolzano and Verona and is quite a unique place. At first glance, it shows the typical characteristics of an Italian town, but one can also see a lot of Germanic influences. No wonder - until World War I Trento belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Thanks to this, among other things, an interesting culinary mix was formed there, interestingly combining Venetian and Alpine flavors.
Trent is famous as the site of one of the most important councils in the history of the Catholic Church - the Council of Trent, held between 1545 and 1563, which was a response to religious movements that shattered the authority of the church and undermined many of its practices of the time. It was in this city that decisions were made to establish seminaries, keep parish books or condemn the teachings of Martin Luther.
The historic center of Trento is quite compact, so a walk through the main attractions of the city does not take all day. In addition, it is exempt from traffic, so you can indulge in an unhurried stroll with your head up to admire the beautiful, richly decorated facades on many of the buildings.
The focal point of the city and a good place to start your sightseeing. It's a cathedral square surrounded by colorful, ornately painted townhouses. The most beautiful of these are Casa Cazuffi and Casa Realia with facades adorned with 16th century frescoes. House painting is a hallmark of these neighborhoods. The paintings do not always include exclusively religious motifs - you can also encounter those related to mythology and completely secular. Often at the monuments there are plaques informing about the date of construction of the building, the author and the subject of the frescoes. The square also has a Neptune fountain from the 20th century. The original one that stood in the Piazza Duomo dates from 1768 and is located nearby in the courtyard of Palazzo Thun. The Roman god of the seas is a reference to the name Tridentum, meaning three teeth, which Julius Caesar gave to the settlement after his conquest in the first century B.C.
This Romanesque-Gothic cathedral dedicated to St. Virgilius is a temple dating back to the 13th century. It was in it that the decrees of the Council of Trent, considered the beginning of the Counter-Reformation, were promulgated in 1563. Right next to the cathedral, in the 12th-century Praetorian Palace - the former seat of the bishops - is the Museum of the Diocese of Trent, which commemorates, among other things, this famous council, but also collects quite a few other valuable exhibits.
The castle is located less than a kilometer from Piazza Duomo. It dates back to the 13th century - it was built on the site of an earlier Roman fortress and was systematically expanded in the following centuries, so that it combines many architectural styles. For several hundred years it was the seat of the city's ruling bishops. At the time of the Council, the castle was used for the deliberations of the clergy. Today, inside, visitors can admire works of art and archaeological artifacts, climb the tower (Torre Aquila) belonging to the castle's buildings, and stroll outside in the gardens spread around the castle.
The museum is housed in a modern building reminiscent of mountain peaks, designed by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano. Some of the Muse's most popular attractions are a tropical greenhouse and an exhibit that takes a closer look at the lives of prehistoric humans, where models look deceptively like living creatures. At the very top of the building is an observation route with a beautiful panorama of the city and the surrounding Dolomites.
This cable car runs from the center of Trento to the village of Sardagna located on the slope of Monte Bondone at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level, offering a beautiful panorama of Trento.
Lake Caldonazzo is located about 20 kilometers from Trento. It is an ideal place for relaxation - there you can combine relaxation on the beach with all possible water sports and hiking. In addition, Trento is located nearly 50 kilometers from the famous Lake Garda, for many the most beautiful lake in Italy.
