Chelm is a beautiful, historic city in Lublin Province, on the eastern edge of Poland, 25 km from the border with Ukraine and 50 km from the border with Belarus.
There are still cities in Poland where life is slower and sightseeing is not about frantically chasing from attraction to attraction. And Chelm undoubtedly belongs to such.
Chelm has always been located in the borderland, which is clearly visible in its history, but also in its religion and preserved sacred monuments. Chelm over the centuries was an Orthodox, Greek Catholic and Roman Catholic bishopric. A Jewish community was also located here.
What to see in Chelm:
1. Chelmska Gorka - or Castle Hill in Chelm.
The towers of the Basilica, located on Castle Hill, are the first thing you see when you enter Chelm. From the bell tower you can enjoy views of the city. The cathedral was twice an Orthodox church in the past.
2. chalk underground in Chelm
Chelm is located on chalk deposits. Chelm's Chalk Underground is an undoubted attraction for tourists. The tourist route through the underground passages is 2 km long, and the tour is accompanied by a guide. Interestingly, the underground tunnels stretch under the entire Old Town. The temperature here stays within 9 degrees. In addition to the attraction of the former pits - in the underground corridors you can meet the ghost of Bieluch himself.
3. market in Chelm or Luczkowski Square
Here you will find a reconstructed town well and the remains of the former town hall, which was consumed by numerous fires until in 1848, it was decided to demolish it. Due to the chalky subsoil (perforated, by the way, like a sieve by mining) - the buildings here are low and mostly up to 4 stories high. It's worth taking the boardwalk to the top of Chelmska Hill to see the panorama of the Chelm area.
4 Chelmska Hill
Chelmska Hill, known as High Hill - is 237 m above sea level. It is located in the area belonging to the church, and there are signs all around saying that one should behave like a pilgrim. So silence reigns here. Inside the church, those willing to visit can also visit the crypts.
5. anomaly hill in Podgórze
Quite close to Chelm, there is a fantastic place for those who are interested in phenomena that defy the laws of physics. Those who have not had the opportunity to get acquainted with the Magic Hill phenomenon have the opportunity in Podgórze. Here the car drives itself to the top of the hill.
6. synagogue in Chelm
Before the Second World War, Jews made up almost half of Chelm's population. Singer wrote about the Jews of Chelm. The smaller synagogue building now houses a bar.
7. the Church of St. John the Theologian in Chelm
Another testimony to the multiculturalism of the area, this time an Orthodox church, still open today.
These are just suggestions of places worth seeing while in Chelm. But the city has a lot more to offer. About which it is worth to convince yourself personally.
