Eisenach Germany - basic information

Eisenach is not one of the most famous cities in the country of our western neighbors - many readers probably hear the name for the first time. This is not surprising, as Eisenach has a population of just about 42,000 and is located in Thuringia, the central part of Germany. One searches in vain for spectacular natural monuments, mountains or lakes here. So what is it that makes Eisenach talked about in a tourist context?

Because it was here that one of the most famous composers of all time - Johann Sebastian Bach - was born in 1685. This master of the Baroque era was born precisely in Eisenach Germany and lived here until the death of his parents. To this day, in his hometown, we can visit the Bach House, which opened to tourists in 1907 and is still the largest museum facility dedicated to the artist. Music lovers can admire more than 250 original artifacts from centuries ago (including the master's autograph and display case), gathered on 600 square meters of exhibition. The tour is enhanced by mini-concerts played on historical instruments. Outside there is a statue of Bach.

Eisenach Germany - not just Bach

The musician's family address is, of course, not the only tourist attraction of this town. The central square and the place where every visitor to Eisenach is likely to reach is Karlsplatz. Here you will find, among other things, the church of St. Nicholas connected to the magnificent city gate (one of five that functioned in past centuries). Karlsplatz is also home to a statue of Martin Luther, about which more in a moment. It's worth remembering that the city has an impressive history dating back to the middle part of the Middle Ages. The second important square in the city is Marktplatz, the market square, with St. George's Church the city office and townhouses with decorative facades. A tourist information center is also located here, where you can get the most important tips for sightseeing and accommodation (Eisenach-Wartburgregion, Touristik GmbH, Markt 24). While strolling through the town, it is also worth noting the narrow Schmales Haus and stately villas: for example, Villa Pflugensberg, Villa Antik Rinascita or the Lutherhaus. The latter was the home of Martin Luther, the founder of the Reformation, for a short time - just 3 years. A museum dedicated to this figure important to the fate of Christianity in Europe has been established nearby.

Eisenach Germany - Wartburg Castle

This is the main attraction of Eisenach, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stronghold dates back to the 11th century, and owes its fame not only to its impressive architecture and hilltop location, but also to the fact that it was here that M. Luther and poet J. W. Goethe, among others, worked. Wartburg Castle is rightly regarded as the city's main attraction - the spirit of bygone eras can be felt at every turn. It also offers a great vantage point overlooking the city.

Those who prefer active sightseeing and walking in the company of nature should certainly not miss the Dragon Gorge - Drachenschlucht. Less demanding walking areas are the Kartausgarten and Stadtpark.
