There is no shortage of beautiful photos of Grenoble on the Internet. However, they do not reflect the true charm of this city. In reality, it presents itself even more beautiful.
Grenoble It is a picturesque town, located at the foot of the Chartreuse mountains, the Vercors range and the Alps piled up in the east, with a historic old town and the main attraction - la Bastille hill - from the top of which we can admire fabulous views of the whole area.
This city of more than 150,000 people is called the capital of the French Alps and the "small-big city." The focal points here are Grenette Square and St. Andrew's Square. It is at these sites that the most recommendable monuments are located, most notably the 12th century Notre Dame Cathedral, the 12th century St. Andrew's Church, the 11th century Saint Laurent Church built by the first Christians, and the 11th century Palace of Justice.
Meanwhile, a promenade with picturesque townhouses runs along the Isere River. There is also quite a treat for all art lovers - the museum at Place de Lavalette. We can admire the richest collection of sculptures and paintings by famous painters Rubens, Chagall, Leger, Matisse, Modigliani, as well as Picasso. The Museum de Peinture et de Sculpture, on the other hand, has - just after Paris - one of the richest collections of modern art in France.
You can spend time here very actively with 320 kilometers of bike paths and more than 20 parks. In each park you'll find exercise equipment, and you'll also be able to have a picnic overlooking the snowy Alps, which seem to be at your fingertips. It is also a paradise for mountain climbers. You can find many very well-prepared and protected rocks here.
While in Grenoble, it is worth visiting one of the oldest cafes in the city, Cafe de la Table Ronde. The cafe was built in 1739 and hosted many famous artists and writers, i.e. Stendhal, Rousseau, Chopin.
Grenoble's biggest attraction is the Bastille Hill (Fort de la Bastille). It is a historic fort located on the slopes of the mountains, whose main task was to protect the city and its surroundings from outside attacks. It is worth making a trip to its top. There is a sizable observation deck, an art center and restaurants. Climbing to the top takes about 40-60 minutes, depending on the route you choose. You can climb up a steep staircase or go up a sloping path. There is another way to get to the top of the hill - by the oldest cable car in all of France (built in the 1930s). Enclosed in a glass sphere, we can count on an equally beautiful panorama. At the top, the views are fabulous. It's no wonder that more than half a million tourists visit the fort annually. On a clear day from this place we can even see the highest peak in the Alps - Mont Blanc (4792 meters above sea level).
At the top of Bastille Hill there is a professional rope park with ropes and bridges posed at the very top of the fort, as well as a tyrolean. At the foot of the Bastille is also a beautiful garden called Jardin des Dauphins. It is a walking garden located on the Isere River, from which we can admire the vastness of the fort and the bronze horse statue of Philis de La Charce.
Today's Grenoble is famous for its electronics and chemical industries. It is also the site of nuclear research and nanotechnology. It is home to three universities (the oldest of which has been in operation since 1339), a polytechnic and a school of management. More than 60,000 students are educated at these universities.
