Ingolstadt the city, comparable in size to our native Opole, located in the Danube valley, is famous primarily for the presence of the Audi automobile concern, at which there is also a brand museum, and the headquarters of the equally popular Saturn and Media Markt retail chains in Poland.
In the Middle Ages Ingolstadt was considered an extremely strategic city, fortified with numerous fortifications with the famous Cross Gate, which, along with part of the walls, still survives today. Together with beautifully restored townhouses, towers and other gates, they create a charming image of the city. Famous sights worth seeing on your tour include the New Castle, with its display of cannons from as far back as the 15th century, which you can reach in five minutes from the Esplanade station, where our buses stop. There's also the Old Castle, the Gothic St. Mary's Cathedral and the Gothic St. Maurice's Church, the Old Anatomy, which is now the Museum of Medical History, the Pfeifturm watchtower, the Old Town Hall or the Bavarian Army Museum.
Also associated with Ingolstadt is the story of the founding of the famous secret society of the Illuminati, which Dan Brown wrote about in his novels, among others, and the fictional character Frankenstein, the hero of Mary Shelley's Romantic period novels, who studied at the local university.
