Kaunas is the second most populous city in Lithuania, it is also the former capital of the country.
In 1391 Kaunas Castle was a gathering place during the Teutonic invasion of Lithuania, and in 1396 in Kaunas the Teutonic master signed an armistice with Vytautas.Kaunas Castle was a place of frequent meetings, reunions , in 1404 there was a reunion of Vytautas with the Teutonic Grand Master, at which tribute was paid to the Grand Master, and in 1408 another reunion took place at the castle, which was attended by Master Ulrich von Jungingen and King of Poland Wladyslaw II Jagiello and Vytautas.
A tour of the city, therefore, should start with the castle, which was built in the 14th century. It may remind us of the Teutonic Castle in Malbork. During the summer, operetta performances are held there.
Near the castle, it is worth seeing the Cathedral Basilica, especially its late Baroque interior, the 15th century Gothic tenement house known as the Perkun House, the Old Town with the town hall and numerous religious buildings. Liberty Avenue and the streets of the Old Town are sure to be a graceful place for strolls.
In the market square there are several pubs serving traditional Lithuanian cuisine. Don't pass by cepelins or kibinas (these are best eaten in Trakai), which are traditional Lithuanian dumplings with lamb. You should try black Lithuanian bread or white cheese with cumin.
After such a delectable meal, you can go to the Museum of Lithuanian Folk Instruments and the Museum of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis-composer, graphic artist, but above all painter (one of the most important representatives of symbolism, as well as a pioneer of abstractionism).
In Kaunas in many places you will see paintings on tenements, or murals. Enjoying increasing popularity, the street paintings have caused the city to create an electronic map for tourists, which includes more than 50 murals within the boundaries of the Old Town and surrounding areas.
The city's value in the area of culture is evidenced by the fact that in 2022 it will, together with Luxembourg's Esch, be named European Capital of Culture.
