Kaunas is the second most populous city in Lithuania, it is also the former capital of the country.
In 1391 Kaunas Castle was a gathering place during the Teutonic invasion of Lithuania, and in 1396 in Kaunas the Teutonic master signed an armistice with Vytautas. ZKaunas castle was a place of frequent meetings, reunions , in 1404 there was a reunion of Vytautas with the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights, at which tribute was paid to the Grand Master, and in 1408 another reunion was held at the castle, which was attended by Master Ulrich von Jungingen and King of Poland Wladyslaw II Jagiello and Vytautas.
The tour of the city should therefore start from the castle, which was built in the 14th century. It may remind us of the Teutonic castle in Malbork. In the summer, operetta performances are held there.
Near the castle, it is worth seeing the Cathedral Basilica, especially its late Baroque interior, a Gothic house from the 15th century, the so-called House of Perkun, the Old Town with the town hall and numerous religious buildings. Liberty Avenue and the streets of the Old Town will certainly be a delightful place to stroll.
There are several pubs serving traditional Lithuanian cuisine in the market square. You cannot pass by indifferently the cepelins or kibinas (the best to eat these in Trakai), which are traditional Lithuanian dumplings with lamb. You should try the black Lithuanian bread or white cheese with cumin.
After such a delicious meal you can go to the Museum of Lithuanian Folk Instruments and to the Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis Museum - a composer, graphic artist, but above all a painter (one of the most important representatives of symbolism, and also a pioneer of abstract art).
In Kaunas in many places you will see paintings on tenement houses, or murals. Enjoying increasing popularity, the street paintings have caused the city to create an electronic map for tourists, which includes more than 50 murals within the Old Town and surrounding areas.
O the city's value in the area of culture is evidenced by the fact that in 2022 it will, along with Luxembourg's Esch, be named European Capital of Culture.
