Klaipeda is a port city located in Western Lithuania. The city is located on both the Baltic coast and the Curonian Lagoon. Here the Danės River flows into the Baltic Sea. About 170,000 people live in Klaipeda, and the city is an important point on the map of Lithuania, not least because it is one of the largest transshipment ports on the Baltic Sea. Klaipeda, due to its historical buildings, is also valued by Polish tourists, who like to visit the place as part of a weekend getaway or during a tour of Lithuania.

The city has a centuries-old history behind it, in which the Kursk Tribe, the Order of the Knights of the Sword, the Teutonic Knights and the Hanseatic League, among others, played their roles. Suffice it to say that Klaipeda is considered to have the most colorful history among all Lithuanian cities. Life here moves slowly during the day, accelerates in the evening, when the sea with greater impetus splashes the waves against the local promenade, and the bustle of conversation comes from the local pubs.

Klaipeda what is worth seeing?

Most of the local attractions are clustered around the Old Town, making travel logistics much easier. The Theater Square, where open-air events are held, is considered an important landmark. Another important city square is the Artists' Courtyard. Here, in historic buildings with Prussian facades, there are art workshops where we can admire handicrafts and try our hand at making them. A stroll through the city must not skip the green oasis in the middle of the urban jungle, namely Danės Square. Here you will find walking avenues, a skatepark, a dancing fountain, a playground and the spectacular Meridianas sailboat (there is a great restaurant inside). A stroll around the square can also be a good lesson in the city's history, thanks to the "Time Zone" exhibit. Klaipeda spoils lovers of walking and active recreation. The most recommended places for walkers are the North Pier and the Curonian Spit (Kopgalis) and Smiltynė. The attention is especially drawn to the latter proposition. Smiltynė is the greenest part of the city - offering peace, quiet and contact with nature. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Smiltynė is also home to the Lithuanian Maritime Museum and an ethnographic fisherman's farm from the end of the 19th century. While in this part of the city, we should also visit the cruise ship terminal - a place captivated by the colors and dimensions of the floating colossi, and an arena for musical events and festivals. Returning to the typically historical sites in the city, we should go to the ruins of a castle built in the 13th century. Among Klaipeda's most popular attractions is the 2.4-meter tall sculpture of the Black Ghost.
