Kwidzyn: sightseeing with nature in the background
Kwidzyn is located in the southern part of Pomorskie Voivodeship. This city, located on the Liwa River, has a population of about 40,000. Kwidzyn is considered the capital of Lower Powisle - the city is located between the Iława Lake District and the Lower Vistula Valley. The unquestionable advantage of this region is the interesting terrain and the presence of numerous lakes, ponds, rivers and streams (a post-glacial remnant). In addition, a few kilometers west of Kwidzyn's borders flows the Vistula River. Lower Powisle has many mixed forests, which are excellent recreational areas. Thanks to its natural advantages, Lower Powisle and Kwidzyn are ideal vacation spots for people who appreciate contact with nature and active recreation (walks, bike rides, mushroom picking, water sports, fishing, jogging). Near Kwidzyn itself, the most impressive stands of trees can be found in Ryjewski Forest, Gardejski Forest and Milosna Forest. In Miłosna there are such recreational and leisure areas famous, among other things, for their equestrian club. It is a capital place for people who want to try their hand at riding on the back of a mount and one of the main tourist attractions in Kwidzyn.
Kwidzyn architectural monuments
The most important monument of Kwidzyn is the Gothic cathedral and castle complex. The mighty, brick-built structure was erected in the 14th century. The impressive building has many features indicative of a Teutonic fortress, but the castle was not built on the initiative of the Order. Its builders were the Pomezanian canons. For them the Kwidzyn castle was the seat from which they ruled the territory of the Pomezanian chapter from 1330-1525. The combination of the castle and the cathedral today makes an incredible impression on visitors to Kwidzyn. It also once had its practical advantages. Suffice it to say that the cathedral tower (59 meters high) was the bell tower of the cathedral, and at the same time the main defense tower of the castle.
Other monuments in Kwidzyn include the neo-Gothic Holy Trinity Church from the 19th century, Fermor's Palace, which today houses one of the local high schools, the classicist building of the Land Court from the 18th century, and the remains of the old town hall, of which only a fragment of the tower remains in the square today. Walking around Kwidzyn, it is also worth noting: palaces on Cathedral Street and Mlynarska Street, the building of the former casino and the headquarters of the Freemasons.
