Połtawais a city of nearly 300,000 people located in the central-eastern part of Ukraine. Due to its favorable geographic location, the city has developed strongly over the years, and is now crisscrossed by major transportation routes connecting Poltava with major Ukrainian cities such as Kyiv and Kharkiv. One of the city's biggest attractions is the Poltava Museum of Local Knowledge named after Vasyl Krychevsky. It was founded on the initiative of prominent scientist Professor Dokuchaev in 1891, and has a unique and very rich collection of antiques and folk art exhibits from both the Poltava region and many other parts of the world such as Egypt, Japan, India and Indonesia. A real gem of the museum are also Cossack antiquities, which record the history of the struggle for freedom and independence of the Cossack people. In total, the resources of the entire facility number about 300 thousand exhibits. While in Poltava, it is also worth seeing the Cathedral of the Elevation of the Holy Cross. It was built in the Baroque style in the 18th century along with a bell tower that stands 47 meters high. It's also worth a trip to the outskirts of Poltava, where a settlement is located that dates back as far as the 17th century. The attraction is a museum where you can admire the work of the famous artist Nikolai Gogol. On the territory of the current urban settlement (it received such rights in 1957) there are also a dozen or so characteristic country cottages dating back to the 19th century, painted in national blue colors.
