Sieradz is a city in central Poland, in the Lodz Voivodeship, with a population of about 41. thousand. It is one of the oldest cities in Poland. Its name derives from "Sirad" or "Sierad", while the first mention of it - from the Gniezno Bull of 1136. However, a settlement here may have already existed in the 11th century. Sieradz was granted city rights between 1247 and 1255. Between 1262 and 1263 the Duchy of Sieradz, dependent on the supreme authority, was established, and in the middle of the 14th century the Sieradz province was established. Elections of Polish kings Jadwiga, Władysław Warneńczyk and Kazimierz Jagiellończyk were held in the city.

Market in Sieradz

Sieradz's market square has retained its original medieval layout, but the surrounding townhouses date from the 19th and 20th centuries. In the very center of the town square is marked the site of the former town hall. There you can also see a 19th-century hand water pump and a monument to Antoni Cierplikowski, a Sieradz-born Polish barber of celebrities and crowned heads, pioneer of modern hairdressing and author of the "tomboy" hairstyle.

The All Saints Parish Church was built around 1370 on the site of a former wooden church. In its façade are built-in doorways from the former Sieradz royal castle. Inside you can admire beautiful stained glass windows or paintings from the 1950s. In 2018, the temple was elevated to the rank of basilica minor.

Podominican Monastery and St. Stanislaus Church

This is one of the most valuable monuments of the Sieradz area, dating back to the 12th century. In the monastery's temple dedicated to St. Stanislaus the Martyr, the election of Jadwiga as king of Poland was held in 1383. Over time, the monastery began to fall into disrepair. In 1922, thanks to St. Ursula Ledóchowska, it was taken over by the Ursuline sisters - since then they have settled permanently in Sieradz, starting educational and charitable activities. It's worth taking a walk through the monastery's cloisters, with well-preserved polychromies and several monuments of sacred art, including a 13th-century sculpture of the Madonna and Child, as well as seeing the beautiful Baroque-Rococo interior of the church.

The Hangman's House in Sieradz

The building on Ogrodowa Street contains a relic of a 14th-century tower and a small building of the city's fortified wall. The name of the building derives from the fact that the building once belonged to the former town executor, who carried out death sentences.

Church of the Holy Spirit

The wooden Church of the Holy Spirit in Sieradz was built in 1416 as a votive offering for the victory won at the Battle of Grunwald, hence it is called "Grunwald Church". At that time it was located in the Warcki Suburb, formerly known as the Holy Spirit Suburb. In 1853 the church was moved to the parish cemetery, where it remains today. It is worth a look inside to see the Baroque altar from the second half of the 18th century and the 19th century crucifix.

This is a small open-air museum, established in the 1970s, with several wooden 19th-century cottages and a reconstructed rural homestead. Folklore events, workshops and meetings with folk artists are organized on its grounds.

Castle Hill in Sieradz

Castle Hill is a green space for leisure activities in the city. A brick rotunda was built here in the 13th century, followed by a brick royal castle in the 14th century on the initiative of Casimir the Great. In the following centuries the castle was repeatedly destroyed, consumed by fires and rebuilt. It was demolished in the late 18th century. Today, only commemorative plaques remind us of it. You can also see restored World War II bunkers on the hill.
