
Here is the largest city in Suwalki, which is a great base for visiting Suwalki Landscape Park and Wigry National Park. Suwałki is a town in Podlaskie Voivodeship, located on the Czarna Hańcza River. The city was founded in the 17th century on the site of a settlement once established by the Wigry Camaldolese monks. Remnants of defensive buildings have survived from those times. Dramatic turns of history have clearly marked the urban landscape, as can be seen by visiting Suwałki. Today it is the second largest center of the province and the cultural center of Suwałki.

We are mainly talking about the tenements stretching around the market square and Kosciuszko Street. Also nearby are St. Alexander's Concathedral and the City Hall. In the aforementioned concathedral we can see, among others, the 18th century statues of the city's patron saints: St. Benedict and St. Romuald. Awaiting tourists is the Arkadia Reservoir, which has a large city beach. Suwałki is the birthplace of poet Maria Konopnicka. Today there is a museum dedicated to the artist and her works in her family home. In memory of Konopnicka's books, 10 figurines of dwarves have been placed around the city. Fans of museum collections can also visit the District Museum, which has collected exhibits describing the history of Suwałki and the Suwałki region.
While in the area, the ruins of the neo-Gothic palace in Dowspuda are worth a visit. It is a recommendable place for romantic walks, away from the tourist hustle and bustle. In summer, a cruise on Lake Wigry on the "Kamedula" boat may also be an interesting option. In the winter season, you can come to Suwalki and the surrounding area for a sleigh ride or cross-country skiing training.
The easiest way to get to Suwałki is by car. The expressway 61 and national road 8 lead here. Non-motorists can take advantage of rail and road transportation. Buses and buses connect Suwalki with other towns and cities in the region, which is especially useful during the holiday season, when summer visitors from all over Poland flock to the local lakes. Choosing Suwalki as your base , by bus you can reach the most attractive places in the region, such as Augustow. The best point to start exploring the region is the PKS Suwalki bus station.
