Szczecin is a city in northwestern Poland, the capital of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. It is located on the Oder River and Lake Dabie near the German border. It has a population of nearly 400,000 and is the third largest city in the country by area.
Szczecin is still nearly 100 kilometers from the Baltic Sea, which means it may not be as heavily visited by tourists as typically coastal towns. However, Szczecin has many attractions and places worth visiting. It is a very green city, with plenty of parks and recreational areas. In addition, as much as 25% of its area is water - the Oder River and Lake Dabie.
What to see in Szczecin? Below are some hints.
So named are the viewing terraces on the scarp with a length of about 500 meters located along the Odra River. Before the twentieth century, Fort Leopold rose there, later the fortifications were abolished, in their place creating viewing embankments topped by four beautiful, monumental buildings. It is a showpiece of Szczecin, a place for strolls and relaxation for residents and tourists.
This Renaissance castle is located on Castle Hill, near the Oder River. From the 12th to the 17th century it was the historical seat of the House of Griffins, rulers of the Duchy of Pomerania. Earlier, long before the castle was built, there was a Slavic stronghold on the hill.
Over the years the castle has been rebuilt several times - the current shape is due to reconstruction after the damage caused during World War II. The castle is impressive both during the day and at night, when it is beautifully illuminated. Inside there is a museum, numerous cultural events are held, and from one of the towers tourists can enjoy a panoramic view of the city.
A place focusing on introducing the city's second-war and post-war history, with a special focus on the landmark events that built the road to freedom for Szczecin and the surrounding areas of West Pomerania. It is full of multimedia exhibitions, and its task is to build and strengthen the sense of identity of the residents of these areas.
A building that has both many ardent supporters and opponents. The first thing that strikes the eye is its modern appearance, for which the building has been repeatedly awarded at various prestigious competitions. The Philharmonic was built on the site of the Art Nouveau Konzerthaus building, which was destroyed at the end of World War II. It's worth going inside and seeing its unusual interiors designed to have the best possible effect on the ideal acoustics of the rooms.
This city, which is quite vast in area, has many highly rated places where you can taste really good cuisine. In the restaurant "Karkut" you can eat great steaks, and classic Polish cuisine with a touch of modernity and nonchalance can be tasted in "Spiżarnia Szczecińska". In the city you will also find many places serving dishes from all over the world, for example, Czech cuisine - reigning in the "Hospudka" restaurant.
Local beverages are worth seeking out in the establishments, including the well-known Szczecin Bosman beer or kraft beers from the Gryfus brewery. For coffee, you can go to one of the dozen or so excellent cafes scattered throughout Szczecin. Noteworthy is "Café with Books - Tenement House in the Forest", where in addition to delicious coffee sipped in a pleasant atmosphere, you can buy books, including those related to the history of the city.
The city's location - in the very corner of the map of Poland, but not on the coast - means that tourists from other parts of the country do not visit it very often. In addition, the trip to it from many places in Poland can seem quite long. However, it is worth dropping by Szczecin, if only on the way to the sea. The city is well connected. It has eight railroad stations spread throughout the city, as well as the Szczecin PKS bus station located near the Szczecin Główny railroad station. The best way to get around the city itself is by bus or streetcar.
