This city, which lies closer to Bialystok than Grodno, is a unique cultural mix. That's because Lithuanians, Ukrainians, Jews, Tatars, Kalmyks, Azerbaijanis and Poles live here side by side. The Volkovysk region, according to many sources, is one of the largest concentrations of Polish people. Poles, just after Belarusians, make up more than 50% of the total population. Including the other national groups, the Volkov region now has a population of about 80,000 and is counted among the pearls of Old Church construction in this part of the country.

Rome has its wolf,Wołkowyskhas a wolf. In the old days, a huge pack of wolves reportedly lived in the surrounding forests - hence the name. Meanwhile, according to legend, the city was built in the forest on the site of the hiding place of two robbers, Volokh and Viska.

Start your tour of the city with a hiking or biking trip one of the most popular routes is the way to Castle Mountain, also known as Swedish Mountain. It features the ruins of a castle dating back to the 14th century. It is likely that the castle was built by Swedish soldiers around the burial site of their commander. The small hills overgrown with forests on the Nemunas River are conducive to bicycle excursions that do not require much fitness.

The rich multicultural history of Volkovysk can be traced by following the trail of sacred buildings. First of all, there are beautiful Orthodox church buildings in the city, with St. Nicholas Church at the top. It was built in 1847 in the Byzantine-Russian style. Echoes of Polish culture and tradition are strongly present in Volkovysk's architecture and memorials. This undoubtedly includes the cemetery of January insurgents from 1863 and Polish Army soldiers killed in 1919 - 1920. Near the cemetery, there are barracks of the 3rd Horse Rifle Regiment.
