Ząbkowice Śląskie is a beautiful, historic city located in Lower Silesia, in the Sudeten Foreland, in a basin called the Ząbkowice Depression, on the left bank of the Budzówka River, west of Ziębice and north of Kłodzko.
The city boasts interesting architectural monuments. There is the unique Leaning Tower - one of several in Poland, which is now an observation point, the magnificent ruins of a Renaissance castle or the beautiful Town Hall with its high, soaring tower tower overlooking the Market Square and the Old Town. There are also medieval city walls and the equally old St. Anne's Church.
Intriguing are also some dark events from the history of Ząbkowice Śląskie, which are mentioned in Frankenstein's Laboratory. Not everyone knows that Ząbkowice Śląskie was called "Frankenstein" until 1945. In 1606 the town was struck by the plague and almost 2000 inhabitants died. It didn't take long for someone to link the attack of the disease with the activity of Ząbkowice gravediggers. Soon containers with poisonous powder were found in the suspects' apartments. After being tortured, the gravediggers testified that they had spilled the poison in their homes, as a result of which so many people died. The plague died out after a few months, but it was still talked about for a long time. In the course of time a legend arose about a horrible monster that supposedly caused the plague in Ząbkowice. This monster was called Frankenstein, after the name of the town where this dark story took place.
Wonderful architecture and mysterious past are only part of the attractions that Ząbkowice Śląskie has to offer. The whole is complemented by wonderful cultural events. The first one is the "Folk Fiesta", which takes place every year in early July. It usually lasts a few days and is held in the ruins of a castle, which gives it a unique atmosphere.
