Basel is Switzerland's third-largest city and the only one with a port - a river port, of course. It is located on the Swiss border with Germany and France on the Rhine River. The first place to visit is the local old town, with its Gothic cathedral, dark red town hall, Spalen gate (one of three still standing) and the famous white and blue houses. Of Basel's museums, it's worth visiting the Tinguely Museum - a prominent Swiss sculptor and painter working in the 1950s and 1960s, famous especially for constructing moving installations and machines, or the Natural History Museum with its huge collection of fossils, remains of prehistoric animals, where you can also learn about the history of the creation of the Alps and the entire region. Also noteworthy is the Museum of Art, one of the most important cultural institutions in the country, full of famous works of art from the 15th century to the present day.

You can get to Basel by plane, flying to France's Saint-Louis airport, from which you take a city bus to Switzerland.
