The capital of Latvia, Riga is the most populous city in all the Baltic countries. It is located on the estuary of the Daugava River into the Baltic Sea. Riga is a city with a rich, long history. For many centuries it was a member of the Hanseatic League.
What interesting things does Riga offer visitors? It is best to start sightseeing from the beautiful and atmospheric old town. There you will find many historic townhouses, often built in the Art Nouveau style. There are more than 800 such buildings, which is why Riga is often called the main center of Art Nouveau in Europe. In addition, the city has preserved some medieval defensive walls, Gothic churches and old granaries.
An important monument is the Riga Cathedral, which dates back to 1211. Inside it hides a huge Baroque organ with more than 6,700 pipes. Every day at noon you can come to a short concert and listen to their sound. Also worth seeing is the Cathedral of the Nativity, a beautiful Orthodox church, and St. Peter's Church, built in 1209 in Romanesque style and later converted to Gothic. The church draws attention especially with its 122-meter tower, with one of the prettiest panoramas over all of Riga.
The city has several interesting museums. The Museum of the Occupation, the Museum of Art Nouveau and the Museum of Automotive Engineering are especially worth a visit. While in Riga, you can also visit the nearby open-air museum - the Latvian Ethnographic Museum showing what life used to be like in the various regions of present-day Latvia.
Although Latvia seems to be a rather distant country from Poland, it is very easy to get to the capital by car. From Warsaw it is less than 670 kilometers. Similarly, a bus ride won't take too long. Our coaches stop at the Riga bus station, near the main Riga train station and the Central Market. This trip can also be made even faster, by plane. It's about 9 kilometers from the airport to the city center.
