Attractions of the city that should not be missed are the Palais de l'Ile, a 12th-century building with an interesting shape located on a small island in the Thiou River in the center of Annecy's old town. The city also has a number of beautiful churches, such as the 16th-century St. Peter's Cathedral, the 17th-century Church of St. Francis de Sales and the neo-Romanesque Basilica of the Visitation. There is also a remarkable arboretum, or park, with numerous species of trees, including those rare and uncommon in Europe. Right next to it is the famous Bridge of Lovers (Pont des Amours), a footbridge located on the shore of Lake Annecy at the entrance to the Vassé Canal. While here, take advantage of the many opportunities for active recreation.
