Bern only has the status of a federal city, and Switzerland is a confederation of cantons and has no established capital. Instead, the authorities administering the state reside in Bern.
The symbol of the city and one of its most important monuments is the late Gothic cathedral - the largest church in Bern, as well as in all of Switzerland. Take a stroll through the old town full of historic buildings, visit the Paul Klee center with an exceptionally rich collection of his works or see the former home of the world's most famous physicist. Bern is the city of Einstein. The Nobel laureate lived and worked here from 1902 to 1914. The building at Kramgasse 49, in Bern's old town, houses his apartment, where you can now see numerous photos and personal memorabilia of Albert Einstein.
