Leverkusen is a city of more than 160,000 people in western Germany, located on the Rhine River in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Although its history as an urban center is not long, it is inextricably linked to the development of industry and the Bayer pharmaceutical plant. In 1861, German chemist Carl Leverkus established his factory in the area - then the village of Wiesdorf.
