First mentioned in the 12th century as a former Slavic stronghold. The city developed rapidly. In later times, mainly the cloth industry was destined for export, but smaller and larger factories also operated. After World War II, the thermotechnical, furniture or agricultural industry developed.
Worth seeing are such monuments as the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, the Castle of the Knights of St. John, the defensive walls, the tower, and the Town Hall along with the Market Square. Noteworthy is the Statue of Jesus Christ King of the Universe, which in 2010-2011 was the largest statue of Christ in the world.
A personality associated with the city is Czeslaw Niemen. The artist had family here and was very fond of visiting the city. One of the city's benches was named specifically for him.
