First mentioned in the 12th century as a former Slavic stronghold. The city developed rapidly. In later times, mainly the cloth industry was destined for export, but smaller and larger factories also operated. After World War II, the thermotechnical, furniture or agricultural industry developed.

Noteworthy is the Statue of Jesus Christ King of the Universe, which in 2010-2011 was the largest statue of Christ in the world.
