Kamenets Podolsky was probably founded in the 11th century (Armenian chronicles prove so). In the 12th and 13th centuries the stronghold, belonging to the Halicko-Vlodzimierska Rus, was located on the site of the present castle, and its sub-grounds in part of today's Old Town.

Zgorzelec is a seemingly small city with a population of 30,000, located on the border with Germany. Zgorzelec on the Polish side and Görlitz on the German side are actually one city divided by a river, since 1945, after the border was established on the Lusatian Neisse River.
