Lausanne is a city and the capital of the Swiss canton of Vaud in the west of the country. It lies on three hills on the northern shore of Lake Geneva and has been a sizable settlement of great commercial importance since antiquity thanks primarily to its location on the route of an important route from Italy to Gaul.
